Things I'm supposed to be working on on UPSU.net: projects, news, updates, and so on

Current project

  • Lots of stuff - see below ;o)

Planned projects

  • Blogs homepage
Complete the blogs homepage, then devise advertising strategy, create training and help documentation.
  • "Ask UPSU a question" component
Lets anyone send us a question. We can answer and publish, or ignore/delete/reply privately. Tasks include designing workflow, layouts, access control, functionality and implementation.
  • JobShop component
(My final year project) A major redesign to create a much simpler system for C McCann to use and maintain.
  • Clubs and societies
URL fixing, and updating the un-owned homepage layouts to the new design of homepage template.
  • Redesign of club and society portal pages
Found here and here, the new design will contain more information, a more dynamic layout, and give less space to the associated newsfeeds to reduce the obligation to maintain new news content to keep the page interesting.
UPDATE (29/01/07): society homepage is done. Clubs page isn't (yet!)
  • Redesign of other Get Involved portal pages
For example, the Get Involved homepage. The end result will be graphically orientated, with a better use of colours, and better provision of information to encourage better use of these mini-sites.
  • Profile page layout
A redesign of profile page template is needed to better integrate blog-orientated information with a view to increasing the emphasis on the UPSU.net student community. In short, better coding, and a new layout.
  • Forums
Tidy up messy code and layouts
  • News listings
Tidy up and integrate image manipulation code into the news listings.
  • Simplify news creation
Reduce the work required to add news articles to the site.
  • New RSS feeds
Create a feed to list most recently modified content
  • Friends
Create an "add this person as a friend" thingbob. The recipient of the request can accept or reject, and can block further requests. Also need a simple way of managine your friends and block list.
  • UPSU community
Let's get people talking to each other - there's 20,000 people out there, and surely not everyone has enough friends already, have they?!
  • More work on the tagging systems
User-generated content on UPSU - forums, blogs, comments, and (hopefully) soon allowing people to have their own photo galleries means there's lots of scope for people to create their own little bit of UPSU.net for themselves. Of course, there's no point doing that unless people can explore what other people are doing - that's half of the fun - so finding ways of allowing people to explore the site is very important. Searching for "tags" - keywords assigned to the various content on the site - is one of the best ways as it allows us to express the content in the form of tag clouds, ordered lists, and other nice organised ways. So, the tagging system has to be finished - at the moment you can search for web pages and news articles, and members' interests; searching for photos and blog entries are the two other ways of searching the site I'd like to see up and running. I also want to figure out ways of letting people look at other peoples' contributions to the site in a more organised way. Maybe I can extend the "myupsu" tool to work for everyone?
  • Templates refresh
Update the design of the older site templates to table-less design, and update the graphics.
  • Organic groups
Create and implement group restrictions to allow us to define groups of people, e.g. "Pugwash bods", add members to the group, and to use these groups to restrict access to forums or web pages as required.

Completed projects

  • September 2006: UPSU.net homepage polishing
Redesign the UPSU.net homepage. Make it standards compliant wherever possible. Use CSS and CSS-P instead of tables. Learn something. No great challenge then... ;o)
  • September 2006: NUS issue desk system
Improve the design of the system to handle multiple card types and missing information - all this whilst being easier to use.
  • Pugwash online
The big one - get Pugwash magazine online, and create a robust system that's flexible enough to be teachable, whilst being capable of handling the wide range of layouts Pugwash magazine sees. Tasks include devising a publishing system or method, implementation, version control, design template, implement, create training, and testing.
  • SEFURL tool
Lists custom URLs and allows one-click editing of these URLs.
  • Diary vCal exporter
  • Site audit tracker
  • Elections 2007 mini-site
  • VIP pages redesign
  • Societies pages redesign
