Due to other commitments, I've been woefully slack in working on this project. I am meeting my project supervisor today, so I'm trying to do a little catch up on what needs doing...
About this project
This project is all about a complete re-write of the UPSU.net JobShop. Currently, the JobShop runs on a parallel IIS/ASP server. Although functional, the JobShop is lacking in many key areas which are widely considered to be standard features of a job search website. As a result, the UPSU JobShop's online presence is undoubtedly not serving its customers - the students of the University of Portsmouth and the businesses which advertise within it - as well as it could be.
Additionally, the current JobShop is vastly over-complex in terms of the way it is managed and in the ways it reports its information, making maintenance and analysis of the JobShop's data an over-complex task. Given that the JobShop is staffed by one permanent and, typically, one or two part-time members of staff, it makes a lot of sense to aim to reduce this workload in order to allow the time spent maintaining the information to be of greater value - in other words, the JobShop needs to become more task-focused in the domain within which it operates, as opposed to the current situation where the operators of the JobShop site have to manage a system designed for a far more complex and larger organisation which has been re-tasked to work in the compact environment of the JobShop.
Therefore, I will be (trying to) create a new JobShop website which is easily maintained by a small number of staff, by stripping down the interface and reporting tools to cater for the current and future projected needs of the UPSU JobShop (and similar organisations). Of course, this will require a reasonable amount of analysis of the business' needs above and beyond what has already been discussed (more on that shortly), so these specifications may be changed over time to better suit the objectives of the project.
As well as being the largest task I'll be undertaking on UPSU.net, this is also my final-year project at University. These pages will - by and large - remain viewable by the public, so everyone is welcome to watch, point and laugh as I make a right old mess of this... ;o)
