INTRODUCTION The Third Space Project is a joint venture lead by the University of Portsmouth with the assistance and guidance from the University of Portsmouth Students' Union aimed at providing a social learning space to help develop your student experience. The project started back in 2007 based upon advice from the Sabbatical Team ,led by Elle Gray, to look at how the space occupied by the University Bars Lux and CO2 could be use more effectively and to benefit more students in Portsmouth than just those who occasionally visited the nightclubs. Based upon inspiration from the Saltire Centre (shown in the video below) the project is now at the stage where building works are ready to start on a facility that will accomodate the need for group working space, eating and relaxing aswell as an increased space for the growth in student lead activities.
UNDERSTANDING THE PROJECT DELAYS UPSU has been made aware that considerable delays are now inevitable to the University’s re-development of The Student Centre. The delays to the re-development of Lux and Co2 will cause real concern to the students of Portsmouth. In June, the University proposed a timetable to The Student’s Union and the university Board of Governors that work would be completed by September 2009 - a date which was subsequently communicated to students, staff and local media. Significant delays appear to be caused by indecision and a lack of preparation by the University. Preview Days have also delayed the project and prevented current students from fully benefiting from the new facilities. UPSU strongly encourages the University to focus on providing current students with the resources they need to develop as individuals and obtain the best grades possible. The learning space provided by this redevelopment is essential to the continued development of the student experience; the UPSU seeks reassurances on behalf of concerned students that the construction will be completed in a timely manner, and demands that the University provides a guaranteed completion date. The Vice Chancellor, Professor John Craven, would like to apologise to students for the delay in the construction of the Third Space. Significant progress has already been achieved in the CO2 bar area and our efforts are currently concentrated here where work can be carried out without disrupting the preview days in the adjacent Lux nightclub. Further work to strip out bar equipment has been carried out behind the shutters in the nightclub. Full work on the project will begin in early November and is anticipated to be completed by the start of the second semester in early 2010. |
