10 things to try in 2019
Have you decided on your New Year’s resolutions yet? Even if you haven’t, or you’ve already cheated a little bit, don’t worry. Every day is New Year’s Day - a chance to try something different or new. Here are some of our suggestions to get involved with in 2019.
Take time for yourself
With deadlines and assessments everything can get a little hectic, especially at university. In the new year take some time for yourself, whether it’s taking the time to have a cup of tea or finally catching up on your favourite television show.
Try a new skill or sport
Come to our Give it a Go week from Monday 28h January until Sunday 3rd February, with free taster sessions run by our student-led groups. With no previous experience needed it’s the perfect time to get involved for the rest of the year.
Conquer a fear
The new year is a great time to try new things, but it’s also a great time to push yourself out of your comfort zone. Whether it’s getting involved with karaoke on a Friday night, nominating yourself for a Sabbatical Officer position or try a new restaurant, expect the best and give it a go.
Go somewhere you’ve never been
Visit somewhere that you’ve never visited before. Whether it’s the far reaches of the globe or on a train across the UK, visit somewhere you’ve never seen. Come along to our Travel Fair at the Union on February 1st to meet some industry experts and find out where your next big adventure could be.
Take a moment to breathe. Whether it’s starting to meditate, or just taking a moment whether you’re stressed to take a breath it’s a good way to relax and stop yourself from worrying. Don’t forget if you are stressed to ask for help - either from the university wellbeing service or the academic support networks with the Union Advice Service.
Eat something you’ve never tried before
Trying new foods from across the world has never been easier. With the wide range of restaurants in Portsmouth alone why not give something new a go? You can even get an exclusive 50% off with a Tastecard from participating restaurants.
Donate to charity
Whether it’s your time or donating your old clothes, get involved with a charity this month. Most places will collect unwanted possessions for free, giving you space to get a new wardrobe in the January sales. We also have a RAG society which raises money for charitable causes worldwide with exciting opportunities in the UK and abroad.
Lean how to cook a new dish
Cooking is a useful skill and is a great way to stay healthy as well as keeping yourself on budget in the New Year. The Student Food Project has created a selection of recipes which are easy to follow and affordable for all budgets.
You’re perfect just the way you are! Sometimes being ourselves can be difficult, especially with people we don’t know, but relax. By being yourself you’ll feel more comfortable and probably enjoy yourself far more.
