Top 5 university essentials every fresher needs

With many students preparing for the excitement of university life next month, check out our handy guide of essentials for the upcoming year.

As September approaches it’s almost time for the next big adventure - moving to university. You’ve probably already started thinking about what to bring with you, but deciding what to pack can be tricky. Here are our top suggestions to help you get started:

1. NUS Card powered by Totum

Make your money go further and keep up to date with all of the latest exclusive student deals both in-store and online with an NUS discount card powered by Totum. Available as a one, two or three year subscription purchase from our Union shop when you arrive in Portsmouth. Get 10% off every time you visit Cooperative Food stores, save on travel and much more.

2. Cooking Essentials

Even when sharing communal areas like the kitchen it’s tempting to pack everything, including the kitchen sink. But a few handy items will go a long way:

  • A plate, a cup and a set of cutlery.
  • A saucepan and wooden spoon.
  • A sharp knife and chopping board.

3. Door Stop

Meeting new people can be daunting, but whether you’re in halls or private housing, a doorstop can be a powerful tool in making new friends. Propping open your bedroom door will go a long way in creating an inviting environment.

4. First Aid Kit

Remember to look after yourself. Whether it’s because of Freshers’ flu, the morning-after hangover or even a paper cut, you’re likely at some point in the year to feel worse for wear. Keep a first aid kit handy, packed with essentials like cold and flu medicine, painkillers and plasters.

5. Freshers’ Pack

Freshers’ week is the most exciting week on the student calendar. To give you the best Freshers’ 2018 experience, your Students’ Union has partnered with the biggest events team in Portsmouth, Eskimo11, to host all official Freshers events. Make sure when buying tickets online that they are from a trusted provider.
