It's ok

Dealing with homesickess

For many, University will be the first time that you've lived away from home. You'll be living a lot more independently and it's only natural to feel homesick from time to time. We've put together some helpful tips to try if you are missing home.

1. Keep busy

Keeping yourself busy is one of the best ways to take your mind away from missing home. Why not think about starting your uni work in advance, planning to meet friends or starting something new!

2. Call home

Talking to a loved one can help to put things into perspective. Just hearing them tell you it's ok you're away from home and that you'll see each other soon enough might do the job. And sometimes a little moan from your parents helps you realise that being away from home isn't too bad after all!

3. Invest in self care

Everybody needs to make time for self care. Whether that's putting your favourite heavy metal on full blast or reading your favourite book, do whatever helps you wind down and focus on, you!

4. Surround yourself with home comforts

Make your space feel like home by bringing home comforts with you. Put pictures around, bring things to make your room look nice and don't be afraid of packing your favourite baby blanket if it helps you feel settled.

5. Talk to someone

You've given it time, you've followed the above tips and you still feel as though it's all getting a bit much? It's time to talk to someone. Confide in a friend or come and speak to a member of our Advice Service for further support.
