The best locations to see fireworks around the city

Watch the sky light up with colour over the next few weeks in some of the best spots around Portsmouth.

Did you know that Bonfire Night or 'Guy Fawkes Night' is a celebration of the fact that King James I survived Guy Fawkes's attempt to blow up the Houses of Parliament in 1605? At the time, people started lighting bonfires to celebrate and it was later announced as an annual day of celebration. 

Today there are firework displays taking place all around the country during the first few weeks of November. Here are some of the best places around the city to see some fireworks:

1. Portsdown Hill

Slightly out of the city and somewhere you'll need a car to reach, but this spot guarantees the best views of them all. From the top of the hill, you can see the entire city and it's surrounding neighbourhoods. Stay in the warmth of your car, grab a burger from the famous 'Monster Burger' van and enjoy the show!

2. Gosport 

Gunwharf Firework display is taking place on Thursday the 8th of November from 6pm-9pm. A great place to watch this display is from over the water in Gosport, take a short ferry over and see the display from a better view with less crowds!

3. Cosham Firework Display

Each year a huge firework display takes place on Cosham's King George V playing field, this year it is taking place on Wednesday the 7th of November at 7:30pm. You will need to drive or take the train to this display. 

4. Gunwharf Firework Display

Gunwharf firework display never fails to attract a crowd. There's an incredible atmosphere every year and with the shops staying open to 9pm, you can have a walk around or enjoy dinner before heading to the display. 

5. The beach

Ryde's Firework display on the Isle of Wight is taking place on Saturday the 3rd of November at 7:30pm, head to the shores of Portsmouth to catch a glimpse from over the water!
