New officer role structure announced

Since March 2019 we have been conducting a review of the Sabbatical Officer positions to better represent the rights and needs of students now and in the future.

This was instigated by a request from students to do a full review in 2014.

Throughout October 2019 1,173 students gave feedback on some proposed models for the new Sabbatical Officer Structure as part of the Great Big Student Survey.

We have analysed the data which suggests that the majority of students like the new model.

  • 79% said the new roles were clear and easy to understand
  • 75% said the new roles compliment existing Union structures
  • 75% said the new roles represent the issues of a diverse student community
  • 79% said the new roles focus on the rights and needs of students

We also asked whether you wanted a President or an Activist style officer 68% preferred the latter.

We can reveal the new model with the attached role descriptions below:

In addition to their role officers will be allocated a priority campaign that may sit outside their remit. This will be decided by Insight data and be allocated amongst them upon taking office in June.

The Sports Partnership project has been recognised as of high importance to UPSU. A plan is currently being produced to ensure this area is given support. Discussions with UoP partners are still taking place and an outcome is due in the next few months.

Further updates on your feedback

A few comments raised concerns about the lack of obvious representation for diverse or hard to reach groups. The Student Networks already exist to champion these groups as do some student groups. Additional support will be provided by the Democracy & Campaigns officer who will be responsible for motivating and supporting the networks something that is currently split between all roles.

A few comments identified a concern for the overlap between some of the role descriptions and ensuring officers were clear in their remit. Hopefully the fully revised role descriptions make this clearer. Additionally training and support will ensure that in year one the officers have all the guidance they need.

'We are excited to be delivering a new Officer Model structure and look forward to welcoming nominations for the new posts in the upcoming 2020 elections. If you have any questions please email studentfocus@upsu.net
