Future Union is an ongoing project and vision to transform the Students' Union into an agile and responsive organisation that will work to meet the needs of all students, both now and in the future.

Future Union Survey

As a student-led organisation, we need your voice to help shape the Union of the future. The Future Union survey is now open to all University of Portsmouth students, your feedback will form the foundation of the Union’s next strategy, launching August 2018.

As well as helping to create a Future Union that meets the needs of all students, you’ll also be entered into a prize draw to win a £500 STA Travel gift card. One lucky recipient will be able to redeem the gift card to book flights, holidays and even put towards round-the-world adventures!

Prize Draw Terms & Conditions

  • Only one entry will be accepted per person.

  • The prize draw winner will be selected at random by computer.

  • Only the prize draw winner will be contacted personally.

  • There is no cash alternative to the prize.

  • The University of Portsmouth Students’ Union does not accept responsibility for late or lost entries.

  • Entrants will be deemed to have accepted these rules and to agree to be bound by them.

  • You must also be a current student at the University of Portsmouth to qualify.

  • The University of Portsmouth shall be permitted to exclude any entrant at any time at its sole discretion.

  • By providing us with your 'Student ID' you are providing consent for us to analyse the demographic data from your student records associated with your number. This will provide us with a more in depth understanding of how we can support students like you. The data you provide will be anonymised. 

  • The student ID of the prize draw winner will be utilised once to inform them of the prize draw outcome and the administration of the competition.

  • The Grand Prize winner will be selected at random by computer, within three working days of the date of survey closure.

  • One STA Travel Gift Voucher is available.

  • The £500 STA Travel Gift Voucher will only cover flights, accommodation, travel insurance and services (e.g. tours) outlined by STA Travel.

  • The winner will be able to pick a travel destination of their choice the options available from STA.

  • Bookings must be arranged through an STA Travel branch.

  • Should your chosen itinerary cost more than £500, you will be able to use the £500 voucher as a contribution and you will be responsible for paying the outstanding balance.

  • You must be responsible for arranging any additional travel requirements such as transport to airports, passports, vaccinations, travel money and/or visas.

  • Lost or deleted vouchers cannot be replaced.

Why Future Union?

The University of Portsmouth Students’ Union (UPSU) was established 25 years ago, and has provided all manner of experiences and opportunities, helping students to love their time at university.

Students have also changed a lot in that time and continue to evolve; in future, students may be very different to how they appear and behave now.

At twenty-five years old, we have recognised that the current Union model has not kept pace with changes in higher education or the student population and does not continue to deliver for every student.

As a charity, it is our legal responsibility to advance the education of University of Portsmouth students and we believe we can do this best by ‘listening to and acting on the student voice’.

To achieve this aim, the Union is undertaking a Future Union review to improve the work that we do on behalf of all University of Portsmouth students. We want to create an even better Union, one that is flexible and agile enough to react quickly to the changing needs and interests of our members.

Always driven by our members’ feedback, we are now plotting a course for 2025 and creating a ‘Future Union’ model that delivers for all students now and tomorrow.

Reasons for this Project

  • We have a vision of having a positive impact with every Portsmouth student
  • The current model of the 'Union' is twenty-five years old
  • A review revealed the Union’s activities and services are:
    a) Drifting from our core charitable aims (representation, welfare and development)
    b) Delivering for a limited percentage of students

What Will Change?

Following the Future Union survey (autumn 2017), the Union’s student representatives and staff will draft the organisation’s next strategic plan, an important set of objectives that will be adaptable and flexible to meet the changing needs of students for the next 25 years. Our new three-year strategy will be active from August 2018 and take us to 2021 - half way through our journey to being an agile and responsive Students’ Union by 2025.

We are building new functions and standards for how we deliver our services; soon we’ll stop doing some things that don’t impact students and start doing other things we’ve not done before, to help us deliver what our members need - in turn, helping our small charity to become more efficient and effective.

We’ve already established a new insights team to start having more conversations with students so that we can begin our journey to deliver services and activities students need.

As a student-led organisation, we will consult our members at every opportunity. All students will be invited to take part in our Annual Survey in October and you may spot messages about the ‘Future Union’ across our print materials and website, highlighting where changes may be forthcoming.
