Second year I had a nightmare with my housemates. There was a girl I lived with who, in the end, fell out with everyone. She left the house but didn’t pay her rent. We signed a joint contract and they couldn’t get through to her guarantor. So we all had to pay £400 out of our deposits, that's a lot of money. At uni it’s difficult because there’s a lot of trust that goes into moving in with someone. It’s hard because most people don’t know anything about renting a house when they first start, I don’t know how people are meant to prepare for these things. It’s maybe my biggest regret that I didn’t look for advice or help at that time. Since working at the Union, I’ve realised there are so many services out there to help with issues like this. Services like mediation, financial support, academic advice… people don’t utilise these things as much as they should but there is help out there if you need it.
