There’s a big issue at the moment concerning Black, Asian and Ethnic Minority students. They somehow don’t get the same chances of getting a 1st as white, home students. At the moment I’m actually working on a project with the Psychology Department to decrease the percentage of the attainment gap. I used to think it’s nothing we can avoid or fix, I thought ‘that’s just life’. But then I did some research and I found out there is a way to make a difference. The way we’re trying to reduce the gap is by giving workshops to students, informing them of the Growth Mindset. The term was coined by a psychologist called Carol Dweck. The Growth Mindset praises effort rather than natural talent. If we tell these students and educate them, then they will realise that they can grow and that it’s not all about natural talent.
